Migrating Acumatica Customizations to the Modern UI: Sprinterra’s Guide and Lessons Learned

Migrating Acumatica Customizations

Acumatica’s Modern UI is no longer just a preview — it will become production-ready in 25R2, and all customers will eventually need to migrate their customizations to this new interface. While Modern UI introduces a cleaner experience and a new underlying architecture, it also means every customization, from small tweaks to complex custom screens, will need careful rework.

At Sprinterra, we’ve been working extensively with Modern UI to prepare our clients for this transition. Below, we share our technical findings, the pitfalls we’ve encountered, and the methodology we recommend.

Migration of Fully Custom Screens

For custom-built screens, Acumatica provides a built-in converter (screen command Customization → Convert to Modern UI). This tool generates .ts and .html files from the original .aspx. However, our testing shows that while the tool is helpful, it often produces incomplete or inconsistent output that must be corrected manually.

Common issues include:

  • Formatting problems – The converter doesn’t properly format the code, requiring reorganization and cleanup.

  • Control ID mismatches – In most cases, the converter assigns IDs that do not align with naming conventions, so these need to be redefined.

  • Excessive code fragments – In some cases, the converter generates unnecessary field decorator properties that are already covered by default values. For example, type: GridColumnType.CheckBox and textAlign: TextAlign.Center are redundant for checkbox fields.

  • Missing logic – The converter may omit certain original code fragments, which can cause the page to function improperly. For example, the autoRepaint logic may be skipped in scenarios where the second grid’s records depend on the selection in the first grid.

  • Incorrect auto-defined layout templates – The converter may generate layouts that result in a different or inaccurate page appearance. In such cases, the templates and their associated fields need to be reorganized.

Best Practice: Line-by-Line Verification

Sprinterra engineers always perform a full comparison of the original ASPX and the converted TypeScript/HTML. Each control, layout element, and behavior must be accounted for to ensure functional parity. After corrections, the page is compiled and tested to validate that the Modern UI version behaves analogously to the legacy UI.

Migration of Customized Screens

Customizations to existing Acumatica screens require a different approach. According to Acumatica standards, these changes must live in separate extension files. That means the built-in converter cannot be used.

Instead, the process is:

  1. Open the screen in the Customization Project Browser.

  2. Navigate to the modified node (Form, Tab, Grid, Dialog, etc.).

  3. Use the VIEW ASPX tab to see customization highlights (in yellow).

   4. Manually recreate those changes in the Modern UI files by translating the ASPX logic into TypeScript and HTML.

This ensures all extended functionality is migrated correctly while preserving Acumatica’s upgrade-safe principles .

Based on our hands-on experience with Modern UI in 25R1, we’ve observed the following:

  • Conversion Tool – A helpful starting point for generating a basic UI skeleton. More advanced functionality (such as button parameters or auto-refresh logic) may require additional manual refinement.

  • Visual UI Editor (custom screens) – Not available in 25R1. In the 25R2 beta, the available Visual UI Editor allows developers to generate code to insert new elements into the markup of existing screens. However, it does not yet support the creation or modification of fully custom screens.

Documentation & Training – Resources are available and continue to evolve alongside the platform. Since the UI is advancing quickly, training materials may require regular updates to stay aligned with the latest changes.

Time Estimates and Effort

Migration complexity varies widely:

  • Simple screens – May require just a few hours of cleanup and testing.

  • Complex screens – Can take several days to reconstruct and validate due to missing logic, dependencies, and layout corrections.

Sprinterra’s Expertise

Sprinterra has invested heavily in preparing for the Modern UI transition:

  • Team readiness – All developers have completed Acumatica’s Modern UI training.

  • Hands-on projects – We have applied Modern UI in real-world ISV and customer projects, including our internal and ISV products

  • Services we provide:

    • Assessment of customization migration scope and complexity

    • Migration of legacy customizations to Modern UI

Development of new Modern UI-based solutions.

Key Tips:

  1. Start now – Don’t wait until 25R2 is enforced. Early migration gives you more time to test and refine.

  2. Don’t rely solely on the converter – Manual corrections and rework are unavoidable.

  3. Prioritize complex customizations – These require the most effort and time.

  4. Leverage experienced partners – Sprinterra has already done the groundwork and can accelerate your migration while avoiding common pitfalls.

FAQ About Migrating to Acumatica Modern UI

Do I have to migrate my Acumatica customizations to the Modern UI immediately?

With Acumatica 25R2, the Modern UI becomes production-ready. Early migration of Acumatica customizations ensures smoother transitions, more time for testing, and avoids last-minute disruption.

What happens if I don’t migrate my Acumatica customizations to the Modern UI?

Legacy customizations may break or behave unpredictably. Reports, screens, and workflows may stop working once Acumatica phases out the classic UI.

Can I rely only on the Acumatica Modern UI converter tool?

No. The built-in converter helps generate initial code, but often creates formatting errors, skips logic, and produces incomplete layouts. Manual rework is unavoidable.

How complex is migrating Acumatica custom screens to the Modern UI?

Simple screens may take hours, but complex screens often require days. It depends on missing logic, layout corrections, and dependencies in your current customization.

What is the best practice for Acumatica Modern UI customization migration?

Sprinterra recommends line-by-line verification, manual fixes, workflow testing, and validation to ensure functional parity with the legacy UI.

How does Sprinterra help migrate Acumatica customizations to the Modern UI?

Our team combines training, real-world migration projects, and proven methodology. We fix converter errors, rebuild complex screens, and deliver fully tested Modern UI solutions.

Why start migrating Acumatica customizations to the Modern UI now?

Early migration reduces risks, ensures your business stays upgrade-safe, and allows time to handle complex screens before deadlines.
